1. Disinfect counters and cutting boards.
Undiluted hydrogen peroxide is effective at killing E. coli and Salmonella bacteria, making it ideal for cleaning counters. For best results, allow hydrogen peroxide to sit on the surface for 10 minutes at room temperature.
2. Clean the dishwasher.
A recent study found that 83% dishwashers inspected in residential homes tested positive for fungi. A total of 503 fungal strains were discovered, primarily in rubber seals, side nozzles, doors, and drains.
Hydrogen peroxide can be used to eliminate mold and mildew in the dishwasher. Simply spray the areas in the dishwasher where moisture tends to be prevalent.
3. Remove germs from trash cans.
To kill germs, wash your garbage can with soap and water, then spray the container with a 1:1 mixture of water and hydrogen peroxide. Let the trash can dry and begin to reuse again.
4. Use for streak-free mirrors and glass surfaces.
Combine water and hydrogen peroxide into a spray bottle (1:1 ratio). Spray onto glass surfaces and wipe with paper towels, newspapers, or lint-free cloth to eliminate streaks.
5. Clean your toilet.
According to the CDC, hydrogen peroxide has been shown to be effective at removing many dangerous microorganisms in the bathroom, including spores, viruses, fungi, bacteria and yeasts.
To use on the toilet, pour 1/2 cup of hydrogen peroxide into the toilet bowl. Clean with toilet bowl brush, let sit for 20 minutes then flush.
6. Kill shower stall mold and mildew.
To kill mold and mildew in the shower, simply spray hydrogen peroxide on shower areas, let sit for 30 minutes and rinse. Note: this will kill the mold and mildew but might not remove the stains.
7. Remove soap scum from the tub.
Soap scum can be removed from fiberglass showers and tubs by mixing the following ingredients:
- 1 cup baking soda
- 1/4 cup white vinegar
- 2 tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide
When combined, the mixture will bubble. When they subside, scrub the affected areas as needed.
8. Remove rust and rust stains.
Caked on rust and rust stains can be removed from hard surfaces by spraying affected areas with a light coat of hydrogen peroxide. Let sit for 20 minutes then scrub the rust away with steel wool.
9. Remove carpet stains.
Place a capful of hydrogen peroxide on a carpet stain, let it sit for a few minutes and wipe up.
Note: to ensure there are no problems, test on a small section of the carpet before applying.
10. Refresh old mattresses.
Spot-clean your mattress with the following ingredients:
- Hydrogen peroxide
- Liquid dish soap
- Baking soda
Combine equal amounts of each in a spray bottle and shake gently. Spray directly onto affected areas and blot dry with cotton balls or a clean rag. Make the bed when the mattress is fully dry.
