Whatever you think of this trend, it was probably inevitable. Wellness has become almost a religion in America, and many of its devotees are high-net-worth individuals. In an era where home is everything, how long was it really going to take for people to start putting sanitariums in their homes?
By sanitariums, we mean full-blown health spas with saunas, steam baths, and cold plunges. Elle Decor reports that spas are now one of the top demands that home designers get at the high end of the spectrum, many complete with mani-pedi stations and champagne bars. Self-care sanctuaries are even starting to replace home gyms, as people start to focus on their chakras instead of their glutes.
It’s a turning point and one that’s culturally interesting even for those of us without the means to go full Roman Empire on our next remodel. And don’t feel too envious. Did you know that special HVAC systems have to be installed to handle all of the steam?
