Masks off, almost everywhere — just like that.
Just a week ago, much of the country was still living under DefCon-5 level Omicron precautions. But over the past few days, mask mandates and even vaccination checks have been dropped in blue states across the country as Democratic governors try to get ahead of public exhaustion.
Moving freely, gathering openly, and living life without P.P.E. is where most people want to be. But the stunning abruptness of the reversal could set up some pitched battles, particularly in blue-state suburbs where many parents and faculty are reluctant to abandon masks in classrooms.
